Doug will speak on his experiences using Vacuum tube equipment at the start of his career recording with Tape machines. Through the change to solid-state amplifier electronics, moving into digital recording and then back to Vacuum tubes with the PCM format, to finally present-day recording in high-resolution DSD format. Doug will also talk about how he started designing his own Vaccum Tube Amplifiers and Processors, which eventually became the D.W Fearn product line.
Doug Fearn has made his living from professional audio since 1966. His first exposure to professional recording equipment was at his high school FM station, where he recorded school events and his friends’ bands. He was a recording studio owner in the Philadelphia area for many years before starting the current pro audio equipment manufacturing company, D.W. Fearn, in 1993. He has designed all the products, including microphone preamplifiers, equalizers, and compressors. He still does several recording sessions a month, either at his studio or at other studios.
