Description
d&b audiotechnik E5 2-Way Coaxial Loudspeaker
Offering distinct advantages for fixed installation, including smaller cabinets, horizontal or vertical placement, and greater clarity than traditional designs, the point-source E5 is a lightweight 2-way passive loudspeaker using a neodymium LF driver and a coaxially mounted wide dispersion dome tweeter. It offers a wide symmetrical dispersion pattern in the horizontal and vertical plane while the cabinet may be mounted in either attitude. The E5 is intended for mobile near-field applications for speech and music reinforcement in theaters, conferences, industrial presentations, broadcast studios, and as surround sound, delay, and fill systems.

d&b audiotechnik E5—Parsing the Details
The E5 cabinet is a lightweight 2-way passive loudspeaker using coaxially mounted, wide dispersion dome tweeters. The coaxial design offers a symmetrical dispersion pattern in the horizontal and vertical planes while the cabinets may be mounted in either attitude. The E5 features a 5″ neodymium LF driver in an ultra-compact, sealed enclosure. Its frequency response extends from 85Hz to 20kHz.
The enclosure is injection molded with an impact-resistant black paint finish. The front of the loudspeaker cabinets is protected by a rigid metal grill.
The E5’s rear panel has an M10 threaded insert to accept the Z5356 E5/E5 Ball joint adapter. The cabinet is fitted with a pair of NL4 connectors and a two-pole push terminal block.
The E5 can be used in standalone or supplemented by different subwoofers from the E-Series. Set to CUT, the low-frequency level is reduced, enabling the E5 to be used with d&b active subwoofers.
HFA circuit
In HFA mode (High-Frequency Attenuation), the HF response of the system is rolled off. HFA provides a natural, balanced frequency response when a unit is placed close to listeners in a near field or delayed use. High-Frequency Attenuation begins gradually at 1kHz, dropping by approximately 3dB at 10kHz. This roll-off mimics the decline in frequency response experienced when listening to a system from a distance in a typically reverberant room or auditorium.
CPL circuit
The CPL (Coupling) circuit compensates for coupling effects between the cabinets when building closely coupled arrays. CPL begins gradually around 1 kHz, with the maximum attenuation below 200 Hz. To achieve a balanced frequency response, the CPL circuit can be set to dB attenuation values between 0 and –9. Positive CPL values create an adjustable low-frequency boost (0 to +5dB) and can be set when the system is used in a full-range mode without subwoofers.
Impact-resistant cabinet
The E5’s highly compact sealed enclosure is injection-molded with an impact-resistant black paint finish. The loudspeaker cabinet is weather protected and suitable for outdoor use as standard and is also available with a Special Color (SC) option.
Advantage of coaxial speakers for fixed installation
The holy grail of speaker design, coaxial speakers, otherwise known as point-source, offer at least two distinct advantages over traditional designs. Since the high- and low-frequencies emanate from the same point, the speaker delivers full-range sound in phase, resulting in a smoother overall frequency response and greater clarity than traditional designs. The second advantage impacts installation. Because there is no physical distance between drivers, the cabinet can be smaller, which allows you to take advantage of limited real estate. Also, thanks to the coaxial design, the cabinet can be oriented horizontally of vertically with no change in performance.
